Asher Fredman on the Prospects for a US-Saudi-Israel deal: President Biden would like a grand deal whereby Israel ends the war in Gaza, leaves Hamas in power and recognizes a pathway to a Palestinian state, Hamas releases some of the hostages, Saudi Arabia normalizes ties with Israel, and Biden gets a diplomatic win, quiet and lower gas prices before the elections. A true bilateral US-Saudi defense pact, without Israel, is unlikely.

Arsen Ostrovsky: United States cannot stand idly by and Congress should unleash a hailstorm of sanctions aThegainst prosecutor Khan and the ICC for this egregious and unforgivable action.

Prof. Col. (res.) Gabi Siboni: The large pauses of three to four months were at the behest of the Americans, who constantly pressured Israel not to press Hamas and to reach a deal with the terrorist group. Such pressure reflects Washington’s total lack of understanding of the Middle East’s brutal realities.
There should be no breaks, no interruptions in the fighting. International misunderstandings of the conflict and the Israeli War Cabinet’s mistaken willingness to accede to this pressure have led to a lack of sufficient pressure being applied to Hamas.

The American opposition to the operation in Rafah, and the decision to stop a shipment of weapons to Israel, is a strategic mistake. It signals to Hamas that there is no reason to move forward with a hostage deal.

This is a complex challenge that demands determination and time, and includes significant challenges, like those around providing humanitarian aid to the population. as well as the need to avoid striking the hostages and to take advantage of opportunities to free them.
